I received this ARC from BookConline. I was getting ready to move from Denver, CO to Cheltenham, UK (where I am typing this from) and that is the only reason it took me so long to read this book. Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar is hands-down a 5-star book!
Star Daughter was poetry. Lyrical. There's something about how she writes that is just magical. I loved the mythology in this book and that it's based on the stars. I, personally, have a fascination with the nighttime sky and this book just fueled my love even more.
Sheetal is a great YA lead. Young. Struggling with the two halves of herself (human half and the star half). A pawn in a literal cosmic game. She struggles to grow. She's magnificent.
Minal is the perfect best friend character. Always in Sheetal's corner. So confident in who she is that she's able to woo people for Sheetal (since Sheetal struggles doing it herself) to gain her the support she needs. I'm glad the author didn't stop there but also gave Minal a sweet love interest. She deserved it.
There is so much I could say about the story and the depth of all the characters, but I want you to go and buy this book and experience it all firsthand without being spoiled. So with that in mind, I'll say one final thing about this spectacular book: the Night Market. Moreso than say...Diagon Alley...I wish this market was real. The wonders and magic to behold there. I would most certainly get lost to a place that and be just fine about it. I really hope this isn't the last we hear about Sheetal and her friends and family.
Before I left Denver, I stopped by my favorite Indian restaurant in town, Little India (https://www.littleindiaofdenver.com/). I picked up some amazing (and large!) potato and pea samosas, which were one of the first of many delicious dishes mentioned throughout the book. I have a whole list of things I want to try the next time we get a takeaway curry!
Thanks for stopping by!
