Infinity Son by Adam Silvera - SPOILER WARNING

SPOILER WARNING - There are a couple of spoilers in my review that I didn't know how to leave out. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone.

I gave 3 stars to Infinity Son by Adam Silvera because I felt there was too much whining in it and I didn't connect to any of the main characters.

Infinity Son is based around two brothers, Emil and Brighton. We learn at the beginning that they're twins (or are they...?) and I just don't like either brother.

Emil, while the one with the phoenix powers, is weak and whiney. Even though all these horrible, evil people are trying to kill him, everyone he loves, and everyone like him; he still refuses to really stand up and fight because he doesn't want to kill anyone. Normally we would see this as a positive character trait, but in this case, it's really not. People are literally trying to kill him and everyone he knows and he can't suck it up and do some damage? The Avengers didn't really want to kill people, but they did. The Winchester brothers were devastated about the body count they wracked up over the years, but they knew it was necessary to save the world. Does this make me jaded?

Then...there's Brighton. He's just kind of a dick. Power-hungry. Fame obsessed. Self-absorbed. Pretty much the poster child for thinking way too much of oneself, while still being ridiculously self-conscious. Plus, I think he's a horrible brother. He's not rushing to help save Emil and the other celestials out of the goodness of his heart. He's doing it for his ego.

I'm sure they were written like this to show the differences between the two brothers. The brother that would have kicked ass with the powers doesn't get them, leading the reader to most likely agree that the brother who did get them was the right choice. There wasn't enough additional character development for me to overlook their flaws and still root for one or the other though.

I do love mythical creatures, so I did enjoy having them play a role in the story. The ending was more interesting than the rest of the story. I might read the second one just to see how that ending plays out. I'm hoping with the world-building from Book 1 done, the action will pick up and we'll get to know some of the other characters better. All-in-all though, a book shouldn't rely on its cliffhanger ending to sell the whole story/series.

There wasn't much mention of food in this story, but I liked a scene where Brighton sees all the ingredients for potions (made by the enemy) set up. Dishes are the culmination of different ingredients, just like the potions. That was the inspiration for this photo.

Thanks for stopping by!
